What's Next?

Challenges associated with “big data” require development of innovative algorithms, mathematical models, data-intensive computing architectures, and novel sensor analytic methods that can handle multiple spatial and temporal scales at varying resolution. In response, PNNL seeks novel methods and technologies to accelerate discovery in high-volume, high-variety, and high-data-rate environments.

PNNL will transform data-driven discovery by increasing the speed with which it derives insight from data while reducing the human effort involved. Continuous integration of data with hypotheses will create a new ability to explain current observations and forecast future states.

Three goals will position PNNL at the forefront of data analytics for the next decade:

  1. Lead an alliance of research partners in developing next-generation algorithms, models, and architectures
  2. Explore stewardship of data collected for scientific purposes and make them available for other uses
  3. Increasingly partner with systems integrators and mission support contractors to transfer research technologies into operational environments for increased mission impact.
